14 Days of Bliss in Bhutan: My Amankora Adventure
I’m not exaggerating when I say this trip was life-changing.

When we booked the 14-night Amankora Journey in Bhutan, we knew it would be luxurious and adventurous, but we had no idea it would completely reset our minds, bodies, and souls.

From the moment we stepped off the plane in Paro to the final goodbye with the Amankora staff, every moment was filled with jaw-dropping views, delicious food, and a deep sense of serenity.
Paro Lodge – Gateway to Bhutan:
We kicked off our journey at Amankora Paro, nestled in a lush valley surrounded by pine forests. The lodge was a dream—minimalist but warm, with floor-to-ceiling windows that framed the Himalayan peaks like a work of art. Jet lag? What jet lag? A warm stone bath and a welcome meal of ema datshi (Bhutan’s famous chili and cheese dish) cured us instantly.
The highlight? Hiking up to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery. It’s a steep climb, but the views? Worth every huff and puff. My husband joked that I was racing the monks up the trail, but hey, I wanted to earn my post-hike massage at the lodge spa (which, by the way, was heavenly).

Thimphu Lodge – Modern Meets Traditional:
Next, we headed to Amankora Thimphu, located in Bhutan’s charming capital. The vibe here is completely different—think quiet sophistication with a modern edge. We explored the bustling Weekend Market, where I tried fried yak cheese…
One night, the staff arranged a private dinner under the stars, complete with a bonfire. My husband was in his element, sipping local whisky and pretending he was some kind of Himalayan explorer. I, on the other hand, couldn’t stop talking about how delicious the momos (dumplings) were.
The drive to Amankora Punakha was a highlight in itself—winding roads, mountain passes, and a stop at the Dochula Pass with its 108 chortens (stupas). This lodge had a totally different feel, surrounded by rice paddies and overlooking a sparkling river.

We spent one unforgettable afternoon rafting down the Mo Chhu River. Picture me screaming (in delight!) while my husband laughed his head off. Later, we toured the Punakha Dzong, one of the most breathtaking fortresses I’ve ever seen. At the lodge, the staff welcomed us back with hot tea and traditional snacks, which we devoured while sitting by the fire.

Gangtey Lodge – A Winter Wonderland:
By the time we reached Amankora Gangtey, I was convinced Bhutan couldn’t possibly get any more beautiful. I was wrong. The Phobjikha Valley, home to the endangered black-necked cranes, was like something out of a fairy tale.
We spent our days trekking through misty forests, visiting local villages, and just soaking in the tranquility of the valley. My husband joked that I was turning into a monk because I was so zen. But honestly, there’s something magical about Gangtey’s stillness.

Bumthang Lodge – Bhutan’s Spiritual Heart:
Our final stop was Amankora Bumthang, where Bhutan’s spiritual roots run deep. The lodge felt intimate and cozy, and the staff treated us like family.
We visited some of Bhutan’s oldest temples, including Jambay Lhakhang and Kurjey Lhakhang, and learned about the country’s rich Buddhist history.
On our last night, the staff surprised us with a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath followed by a farewell dinner. I may or may not have cried (okay, I definitely did).
Why This Trip Was Everything
